The Image of the Other (in 8 languages)
How to use The Image of the Other and eJournals?
The Image of the Other –ESPA project for language learning

1. What is “The image of the other”?

‘The Image of the Other’ is one of the examples of good practice for language learning as there are manuals and materials for 8 different EU languages offered in the portal (http://www.espnet.eu/image/ ). They are meant to be used in foreign language lessons. These Web-manuals offer a complete scenario for planning, undertaking and evaluating this project.

The ESP project The Image of the Other is based on the idea of letting the students work in pairs in order to give everybody a chance to get a personal contact with a peer from abroad by using a common foreign language as a mean of communication.
  • The target group are student aged from 9 – 19, so from elementary to upper secondary schools.
  • The language level expected in this project can be (defined according the CEFR -The Common European Framework of References classification) from a basic user to an independent user
The idea behind this project is to give a good picture of partner's personality and background, and to learn a lot about his or her country. So the letters cover 10 different themes from introducing themselves, describing homes, schools, hobbies, details, hometowns, regions, countries to writing diaries and tourist guides of the home place. Teachers and students are also free to add themes according to their needs and wishes.
Their virtual cooperation is manly based on sending e-mails to exchange information, data, opinions, etc., on many different subjects. An electronic mail is a fantastic medium for such a communication and language learning, but fast development of ICT nowadays offers also new challenging possibilities for creating significant social networks. eJournal is one of such powerful e-environments with remarkable advantages and possibilities for enrichment of the communication between students and language learning.
It provides possibilities for learning through
  • writing different types of articles,
  • commenting and rating them,
  • publishing videos, voice files,
  • exchanging ideas through short messages ,
  • organising live on line sessions with partners,
  • additional tool FastWrite with some pre-designed questionnaires about most of the project topics that assist and guide students with closed and open questions in structuring and covering the most important elements of the topic when writing a text. After submitting the FastWrite answers the students get a draft for their articles that can be further elaborated and edited for publishing.
One of the important features of eJournal is also the fact that students’ work can be not only viewed and read but also commented by other users such as other teachers, pupils, parents, friends and other users of internet.
2. Practical suggestions how to use e-journal for enriching the Image project activities

Using eJournal within the project gives students an opportunity to learn also how to write an article, an essay, a report, analyse an event or design an advertisement. They can make them even more interesting by adding graphics, videos and voice files. supports also a two way communication so they are asked to comment partners’ published materials and rate them. Before starting to use eJournal for the project purposes it is advisable that partner classes discuss, negotiate and plan some important issues like who is going to publish materials (editors- all students, a smaller group - trustful editors, teachers – chief editors), plan what kind of materials are going to be published, how often the materials should be published and decide what the structure of their eJournal should be. For the beginning both partner classes
  • provide accounts to students to be editors of eJournal
  • appoint a special group of trustful editors in each partner class,
  • run a hands on workshop where the students log in and learn how to use eJournal,
  • appoint students to be responsible for certain tasks e.g.: questionnaires, polls, articles, reports, advertisements, interviews, presentations of the class, video clips, photographs, and individual tasks done by each student,
  • plan together the feasible number of articles on the topic to be published in eJournal during the project,
  • appoint trustful editors to think about structure of eJournal and ask chief editors (mainly teachers) to create the planned folders and to be responsible for gathering materials from groups and publishing them.

Here we want only to list ideas, possibilities, hints for the topics of the project how certain things can be done in eJournal. It’s up to the teacher and students to chose and carry out activities. While planning the activities in it is important to take in consideration the students’ language level and their computer literacy.

BTW, Fastwrite questionnaires of eJournal offer students a quick way to come to results with writing texts about different topics. The Fastwrite approach accelerates the writing processes really remarkably, and enables project collaboration even in short periods. Read more aboout Fastwrite of eJournals at the end of this article.

TOPIC 1 – ABOUT ME – ideas and hints for products in eJournal

After exchanging Letter 1 where students introduce themselves to their partners via e-mails, they also start to use eJournal. Here are some suggestions.
  • Each student first logs in eJournal and fills in personal data (e-mail, address, telephone, MSN) in the ‘Personal settings’,
  • With a help of Fastwrite each student prepares an article about him/herself, adds his/her photo or drawing.( http://fastwrite..fi/englantilomake/) and publishes the article,
  • They try themselves also in writing interviews. Some ideas how to do it:
  • o Each student can organise an interview with a classmate or friend and he/she publishes it together with some photos or images in the e-journal.
    • They can decide to prepare an interview with the partners (peer student from partner school) directly in by using internal message system. One of the paired students writes questions, the other answers them. When it’s finished they publish it.
    • They can organize an interview with a person by using live online session tool within eJournal, interview him/her, save the session as a document and publish it in eJournal. (you can find other possibilities also by yourself)
  • After publishing the articles or interviews they comment them (they use the Comment tool below each article).
  • They rate the articles by using the tool below the article.
  • They can also publish a short video or voice file (if they have the necessary ICT equipment) where they shortly introduce themselves just by saying names, ages and a word or two to describes their personalities
  • They organise a live Online session in real time where they can discuss about themselves and save the session and publish it.
Here are two examples of articles in eJournal.

TOPIC 2 –ABOUT MY HOME AND NEIGHBOURHOOD - ideas and hints for eJournal

In letter 2 students tell their partners about their home and neighbourhood. In eJournal each student can
  • prepare interesting article about their home with suitable photos and/or drawings. They can take photos or draw pictures about their rooms or flats/houses and write about them. They can use pre-designed FastWrite questionnaires for this topic too.
  • present also their best place at home, the place where they usually study / do their homework. When they publish articles they put captures below images/photos.
  • take pictures about their neighbourhood and write about thing/s they like or dislike most there, places where they usually meet friends, play etc.
  • prepare a presentation about their home (ppt) and publish it in eJournal,
  • comment and ask questions about the topic after publishing the articles using the Comment tool below each article,
  • rate the articles by using the Rate tool below the article,
  • design questionnaires/polls about the students’ homes in each class
  • (Example: I live in // a house / apartment / flat / )
    • they can write polls on paper and gather answers and elaborate them by writing reports in (using also excel graphs)
    • or using free online polls for creating e-polls (e.g. https://desktop.vovici.com/l , http://www.sparklit.com/ , http://www.polldaddy.com/ … and publish the links in. Such a poll provides results automatically and can be viewed soon after submitting answers.
    • or by using e-classroom Moodle where you can create different types of activities and
  • write essays about imaginary/crazy homes, or homes in space and draw them, publish the articles in eJournal
  • chose the best article by using rate system in eJournal
  • design also advertisements (in texts or video or voice files) for houses, neighbourhoods and rate the most interesting ones.
  • collect internet links about strange/unusual houses around the world by using the internet and publish and comment them.
TOPIC 3 – ABOUT SCHOOL - ideas and hints for eJournal

Letter 3 is about school. It should contain not only general information, but also the opinion about subjects and teachers. In eJournal students can produce a virtual tour of their school using photos, drawings and / or small video clips. How? They can
  • first write together a scenario for the virtual tour and plan their work well and divide it into sections (according to the topics covered or tasks done),
  • organise themselves in different working groups (each gets a part of the scenario concerning their tasks) for example a group for
    • taking photos and / or drawing, shoot video clips of the school,
    • writing texts about those places,
    • presenting classroom timetable, holidays,
    • describing teachers and subjects,
    • depicting different school activities throughout the school year,
    • presenting special events or features of the school,
    • writing about after school activities.
  • next start building a virtual tour of the school in eJournal with taking photos, drawings, video clips about several common places at school, such as hall, canteen, library, computer lab, offices, outdoor spaces, the playground, the gymnasium and of course normal classrooms and so on. They elaborate materials and decide which ones to put in media library for further use.
  • prepare texts to accompany media materials,
  • create a folder named “XY School virtual tour” and within it publish a serial of documents (name them e.g. enter the school, visit our library…) with images, videos and texts according to the scenario made at the beginning.
  • can write a report about the class activities, sports day, competitions…
  • finally can create an online multiple choice quiz (using HotPotato – http://hotpot.uvic.ca/index.htm or QuizFaber - http://quizfaber.en.softonic.com/ ) for partner class with about 10 items based on the information provided in the virtual tour. So partners could check how well they have presented the school or learned about their partner school. The "questions" in the quiz, depend on the information available in the virtual tour in. Some hints:
    • the name of a special subject where something very specific is done
    • guessing the correct origin of a small detail taken from one of the pictures
    • the number of pupils in a certain class, school
    • a special type of after school activity
TOPIC 4 – ABOUT HOBBIES - ideas and hints for eJournal

In letter 4 they discuss about hobbies and the kind of things they like to do in their spare time. This topic can be well covered by eJournal as it gives a lot of opportunities to practice writing or designing different types of texts. They can be supported by drafts from FastWrite questionnaire here too. Students can:
  • write articles about different sports they are active in and comment and rate them
  • write interviews with well known sportsmen/women pretending to be journalists
  • search for internet information on the topic and publish interesting web pages in eJournal
  • write a review of a film they have seen recently or a book they have read and comment and rate it
  • describe teenage life in their place, school, and comment, rate it
  • prepare live online session and discuss how they spend their free time, what they worry about, like or dislike, about how much pocket money they get and maybe if they do any part-time jobs. They save the session and each class prepares a report about the session in eJournal.
  •  prepare polls about the most popular sports, films, free time activities etc. and exchange them in eJournal, gather the information compare it with the partner class and write a report on the topic adding graphs or even photos.
  • present their favourite TV program, pop song and justify their decision by writing the reasons
TOPIC 6 –A DIARY - ideas and hints for eJournal

In letter 6 they show their e-pal what they do during the day by writing a diary. Here students learn how to write an interesting diary. In this case they can
  • present some good examples of diaries they receive from their partners or their own
  • write diaries about “special days” different festivals, the first/last day of school, their birthday..., choose the best ones in the class and publish them together with photos or drawings in eJournal,
  • comment and rate them
TOPIC 7 – DO YOU KNOW EACH OTHER - ideas and hints for eJournal

In letter 7 after receiving the letters with all the answers to the questionnaire they
  • collect them all - the partners' and their own – and analyze them by building a chart for the most interesting questions.
  • The graphs can reveal the differences and similarities between the two partner classes as far as each question is concerned.
  • To make this activity more flexible it’s necessary that both classes negotiate which answers each class has to analyse, prepare the chart and publish it in eJournal.
  1. TOPIC 8 A – MY HOME TOWN AND REGION- ideas and hints for eJournal

In letter 8a they are going to tell their partner about their hometown and their region. Students work on the topic in groups.
  • Classes prepare a list of topics covering all the vital information of their hometown and region and each group covers one of them.
  • Groups write scenarios about the part of the town to present and take photos or draw maps about it (texts and images).
  • They prepare presentations (ppt) or/and articles and publish it in eJournal.
  • Partners read the articles comment and rate them.
  • They can prepare a quiz about their partners' hometown, (using HotPotatoes tool or QuzFaber) publish it in eJournal and partners have to try it out.
  • They can make short video clips about parts of the town and publish.
  • A live online session can be organised on the topic between both classes, but it has to be prepare well in advance so each student can cover one of the questions. Don’t forget to take photos of the event.
  • Publish a report about the session with photos in eJournal.
TOPIC 8 B – MY COUNTRY- ideas and hints for eJournal

In letter 8b they are going to tell their partner about their own country. It can be presented in different ways in. It’s advisable that students work on the topic in groups.

  • Each class publishes useful links about their country in a special folder in (called “links about ….country”) for the start.
  • Classes prepare a list of topics covering most of vital information of a country, form groups that cover one of them.
  • They gather information about partner’s country by surfing internet (texts and images) and prepare a presentation (ppt) or an article about a certain topic. They publish materials in eJournal.
  • Partners read the articles comment and rate them.
  • They can prepare a kind of e-book called "Our country viewed by the eyes of class (e.g. - 7B)... Each pupil is represented in this e-book through his/her text as well as the illustrations or photos to go along with them.
  • They work in groups and each one can cover a different topic about the country (geographical features and other information). This activity can be done in a similar way as the presentation of the school described in letter 3.
  • They can also try to describe stereotypes about their countries if any.
  • They can create a questionnaire about their partners' country, (using HotPotatoes tool or QuzFaber) publish it in eJournal and partners have to try it out.
  • A live online session can be organised on the topic between both classes, but it has to be prepare well in advance so each student can cover one of the questions. Don’t forget to take photos of the event.
  • Publish a report about the session with photos in eJournal, comment and rate it.
TOPIC 9 – SHOWING YOU AROUND - ideas and hints for eJournal

In letter 9 they show their partner around by acting as a personal tourist guides. After writing the letters students can in eJournasl
  • build an online guidebook called "Let’s visit my favourites - by name of a student where each student virtually shows his/her partner things that he/she really likes him/herself and things that show what his/her country is really like.
  • can imagine a three day tour with their partners. Set up and publish the programme for the three days introducing the places to visit and the things to do in each of the days by using photos or drawings to illustrate the programme.
  • prepare a photoalbum about interesting places to visit with captures below photos,
  • can build an online quiz based on the information given to your partners through the letters as well as through the articles in eJournal focusing on the nicest or most interesting places presented
TOPIC 10 – EVALUATION AND FAREWELL - ideas and hints for eJournal

Letter 10 is the last of the series. Hopefully, they have enjoyed the regular contact with their partners. In e<journal
  • they can write farewell articles where they can express their feelings about the work done and they can value their new friendship gained in this project.
  • It is also vital to evaluate the project so students are asked to write an article /report and express their opinion about work done through project, the level of fulfilment of their expectations, good and not so good points, and quality communication within the classroom and with the partners and what added values have been achieved. Students have to be guided how to write such an article or report.
Using Fastwrite questionnaires in Image projects

Fastwrite questionnaires of eJournal offer students a quick way to come to results with writing texts about different topics. Each questionnaire includes vocabulary needed in the context of a topic. The student who fills in the quesrionnaire simultaneously makes  acquaintance with the vocabulary concerned. After filling in all items of the questionnaire the student submits the content. The draft of the text will show up on the screen. Of course, it is not the end product but must be edited further on the screen, or preferably, using an editor program. When the text is finalised the writer can send it to any email address directly on the screen.

This approach has been proved in many projects. The method accelerates the writing processes really remarkably, and enables project collaboration even in short periods.
