History of Heinävesi
|
Before the 16th century Heinävesi was unpopulated wilderness. The first settlement consisted of tenant farmers and peasants. It was a part of Great Rantasalmi which was later divided into several different municipalities. In 1869 Heinävesi proclaimed itself an independent borough. In the early 1800’s causeways were built and the population began to grow. The church was intimately involved in the inhabitants’ lives. Farming and forest economy were the two main sources of livelihood until the 20th century.

Since Heinävesi has always been situated in eastern Finland, wars – for example The Winter War and The Continuation War during the World War II - have greatly affected the municipality. The area of Heinävesi has even been situated on the Russian side of the Finnish-Russian border. In the 20th century industry became more important. For example lumber industry grew and increased the employment rate. In 1950 the population of Heinävesi was over 10 000; nowadays there are only about 4 500 inhabitants. Riikka and Saana
