Hello readers! We would like to present to you the monastery of Valamo which is a very important part of the culture of Heinävesi. Valamo is the Finnish Orthodox Church's only monastery and it is located in the municipality of Heinävesi, in the midst of the beautiful lake region of eastern Finland. The monastery has close connections with the society around it and supports itself chiefly through tourism receiving more than 100,000 visitors a year, both pilgrims and tourists. 10% of them are from other countries.
The daily church services are open to all who wish to attend. There's also a café - restaurant, which serves good food. You can visit the library and souvenir shop, where you can buy souvenirs including the monastery's own wine. The Valamo Lay Academy, which provides courses on Orthodox and related topics, and an Icon Conservation Laboratory are close by. In summer you can also take a cruise on the nearby lakes and canals and visit the Convent of Lintula, not far away.
