Humans have used wind energy for thousands years, but creating electrical energy from wind is guite new thing, it has been used remarkable from the beginning of 1970. Producing energy in wind turbines is guite safe and doesn't pollute climate. It's also comparatively economical way to create energy. In wind turbines kinetic energy is changed to electrical energy with it's rotor blades, gearbox and generator. Wind turbines can have three, two or just one rotor blades. Most have three. The towers are mostly tubular and made of steel when the blades are made of fibreglass-reinforced polyester or wood-epoxy. Power of the wind turbines are controlled automatically as wind speed varies and machines are stopped at very high wind speeds to protect them from damage. When wind turbines are in group they are called wind power plants or wind farms. The ability to generate electricity is measured in watts, but watts are very small units, so the terms kilowatt (kW, 1,000 watts), megawatt (MW, 1 million watts), and gigawatt are most commonly used to describe the capacity of generating units like wind turbines or other power plants.
Questions for Indian students. 1. Is wind energy used in India? 2. And if is, how much of your energy comes from wind energy?
