A Motorbike Accident

My husband and I have travelled a lot of since we got married in 1978. We have travelled by any means of transport: by car, by motorbike, by boat and by plane, and we have never had an accident, perhaps because both of us are quite careful or maybe because we are a lucky couple.

But in May 2005 my husband was not so lucky. We had just bought a fantastic BMW motorbike to travel across Europe in August. One Sunday in that month he decided to go out with his friend Vicente to ride it for the first time.

He went to put some petrol at five in the afternoon, and half an hour later he phoned me to tell me that he had been knocked down by a drunk driver.

I went to hospital very anxious and when I arrived there I saw him sitting in a wheelchair, very pale and nervous, his hands bleeding and his motorcycle clothes torn: trousers, boots, jacket and helmet. Then he told me that the car had crashed into him from the back and he had fallen down. Really, his helmet and motorcycle clothes saved his life.

Now, when I remember it, this accident has been the biggest scare in my life. But we were very lucky, although my husband was in hospital for ten days, the consequences lasted two months and we could not travel through Europe. Anyway, we did it the next year and we had a great time. And we were not afraid of travelling by motorbike!
