Do you have school uniforms at your school?
I am sure that this question is an issue in every school, perhaps also at your school. There are many arguments for and against school uniforms.
To my mind, pupils should have the right to decide by themselves what they want to wear. So they can develop their own tastes and most of the pupils feel happy in their own clothes.
But there are also some pupils who don’t feel happy and satisfied with their clothes, because either they find that they haven’t got as nice clothes as some others or they are told by others that they have ugly clothes. So they are bullied by their classmates and feel like outsiders. In this case the school uniform is a very good solution and would solve problems like these.
Another aspect is that students could better concentrate on lessons and their subjects. Pupils would not be under pressure to choose the right and best clothes to impress others and they would not be watched by their classmates.
So school uniforms would have many benefits: Without a strict orientation on brands the personality and social competence could develop and students would gain a higher self-esteem. It would also advance a kind of team spirit among students and it would show the connection and solidarity with the school.
Besides, there are benefits for the parents, too, who would not have to pay so much for the clothes of their children.
Because of these benefits there is also a kind of school uniform in our school, the Lise-Meitner Gymnasium in Neuenhaus. We have T-shirts and sweatshirt in different colours with the ‘Lise Meitner ‘logo (see picture). However, wearing them is absolutely voluntary. So for us, this is a good compromise.

POLAND

In Poland, school uniforms are not popular among students. In the past they were obligatory, but we got rid of them, however, in some schools (mainly primary and junior-high) pupils are obliged to put on special uniforms every day, but honestly, nobody likes them as they prevent students from expressing themselves.

UNIFORMS GREMBIULE
|
|
When our mothers were at secondary school, they used to wear a sort of uniform, that was called “grembiule” in Italy. It was a cotton dress, usually black, with a long row of buttons on its anterior side and a white collar …horrible!!!
|
 |
Nowadays only children attending kinder garden and primary school wear the grembiule, light blue for boys and pink for girls but I think that’s just useful to avoid dirty dresses!
As about me I think that the uniforms eliminate the differences between rich and poor, all are equal .I like uniform but I hate the Italian traditional “grembiule”.

FRANCE
It may be pleasant to wear a uniform at school providing that it is good looking. Wearing a uniform would prevent some students from being prejudiced because they do not wear any brands or their look is different.
Today in France pupils do not wear a uniform whereas their grandparents used to wear grey gowns and their parents blue ones for boys and pink ones for girls.
In the south of France some pupils used to wear gowns with the colors of the Catalan flag (red and yellow).

I think uniforms aren’t necessary. They may look nice, but you can’t choose your own clothes. I love wearing my own clothes. Clothes tells you something about the person.
We don’t wear uniforms at school. I believe there are no schools with school-uniforms in the Netherlands. I think it’s more a tradition of Great-Britain.
Advantages and disadvantages of wearing uniforms:
Advantage 1. -> You make an obvious difference between spare time and work time.
Advantage 2. -> You avoid discrimination because of wearing other clothes.
Disadvantage 1. -> There is a great chance that there will be a protest against it.
Disadvantage 2. -> It looks very boring.

I don’t want to wear a school uniform because it’s not what I like. You can’t choose which uniform you want. And if everyone wears a school uniform, you are all the same.
In our country people don’t wear school uniforms. But people at work do use uniforms. In some jobs people don’t wear uniforms but they wear a suit.
The advantages of uniforms are:
We are all the same.
You can recognize people when they are working.
The disadvantages of uniforms are:
You can’t choose what to wear.
It’s a little bit boring.
