LONELY MAN by Çağan ırmak

“Lonely Man” is one of the most important Turkish films of the last ten years. It revolves around a love story between Alper, a thirty years old restaurant owner in Istanbul, and Ada, a young woman who designs children's clothing. Alper the main character of the movie feels alienation against his family his community moreover against himself. if we summarize the film with one sentence we may say:” It tells about some people whose lives have been isolated by modern lifestyles” Hailed by the movie critic Uğur Vardan as "Turkey’s answer to ’Love Story’," one of Turkey’s favorite directors, Çağan Irmak’s "Issız Adam" hit movie theaters in front of screen many audiences cried after the Movie. Also I think we can translate the film as the Desert Man (as in desert island), "Issız Adam" due to the fact that it tells the heart-breaking love story of two urbanites, claiming the bohemian streets of Istanbul as their own. Furthermore it focuses more on the inner turmoil and alienation theme. The main male character of the film Alper’s nights fuelled with fun but leading Alper to wake up alone in his bed. Alper comes from rural Turkey, he lives in an expensive apartment he had a well known restaurant so his economic situation is very good. But on the other side He has influence of his rural mentality and background. Alper represents a popular male character in recent Turkish cinema often seen in the movies of Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Semih Kaplanoğlu, among other male directors in their 30s and 40s.
We are constantly reminded of Alper’s awkwardness and the sense of emptiness he feels in a life that, on the surface, provides him everything he wants but making him lonelier each day. He runs a restaurant, he revolt against modern technology such as I Phone. He has a obsession with 70s’ records of Turkish pop music.
In one of his typical days he bumps into a young woman looking for a second-hand copy of Thomas Hardy’s "Far From the Madding Crowd." This woman affects Alper, and chances his life. He feels something deeper and more personal; Alper becomes intrigued by this woman. But in a short time Alper start to feel alienation against this woman too and can’t continue his relationship anymore. Finally he cant escape from his fates and as an alienated individual spend rest of his life as an alone man. "Issiz Adam” Lonely Man despite its low budget became popular in a short time in Turkey. It was watched by more than 2 million Turkish people only in one month. Therefore it will be screened in Western Europe and USA in a short time.
The director of the film is Çağan ırmak according to many cinema critics he is the most important Turkish director of the last period. Çağan ırmak became popular with his masterpiece “Babam ve Oğlum” (My Father and My son) in 2005.
