The macro-housing state near the Voltoya reservoir

The legality of the housing state is in doubt, as more than anything else, a quality water supply for the neighbours of Avila must be guaranteed.

The Environment department of the European Commission has decided to investigate the legality or the illegality of the above-mentioned housing state, since it is near one of the two reservoirs that supply Avila with water. This measure has taken place after a complaint of two ecological groups, Colectivo Azálvaro and Asociación Ecologista Centaurea, who said there was a foreseeable pollution of the dammed water

They also said the supply would suffer a decrease, and a densely populated area could get not enough water. Besides they remembered the Azálvaro Field, where there are going to build the  houses, is stated as Special Protection Zone for Birds and Place of Community Interest; because of this, it forms part of Red Natura of European Union and it appears in the Important Area for Birds.

Therefore, they revealed the protection of the Azálvaro Field is supported by the quality of the habitat that accommodates some species in extinction danger, or that are catalogued, or with a prioritary interest. For example, the Iberian imperial eagle, the black vulture, the black stork, the otter and the wildcat. Finally they underlined it is a optimum location of reproduction, migratory rest and feeding for these and others species.

The housing state project has been paralysed since the nineties because of various judicial resorts, and it’s waiting the Supreme Court pronouncement.

The only building sites carried out until now are roads and gutters. In 1997 there was an information stall and a poster with information about the plots and chalets sale.

Now, through the Internet, we can see publicitary decoys about the housing state, that says it is near Madrid and Avila. They also mention tourist routes like Segovia, El Escorial, El Valle de los Caídos and the “medieval Avila”.
