B I R Z A I The district of Birzai is in the North of Lithuania and borders on Latvia. The area of the district is 1493 sq.km. The population is about 38000 people. About 17000 people live in our town. Birzai stands on two rivers and two lakes. Lake Sirvena is the oldest artificial lake in Lithuania, its area is about 400 ha. Our district is famous for gypseous dolomites. They are in very many places of its territory under a thin layer of ground. There is an old castle in Birzai, which dates back to the 16th century. In 1985 the castle was rebuilt. There is a museum of Regional Studies and a library in it now. A lot of excursions come to Birzai. Here you can find numerous monuments of history, archeology, architecture and art. Still the place of great interest is the castle of Birzai. Not far from Birzai ( 8 km ) there is a health resort of Likenai. The sanatorium of Likenai works all year round. The mineral water which is got from this place is used for healing purposes.
